Questions we get asked
Short answers to what students ask most often. If yours isn't here, pass us a note.

Getting started
What is Hootly?
Hootly is a study platform for students. You get flashcards, quizzes, shared class notes and logic puzzles, plus wellbeing tools like mood check-ins, habits and a private journal.
What can I use it on?
Hootly runs in the browser on computers, tablets and phones. The journal needs a tablet-sized screen or larger.
Does it cost anything?
Creating an account is free, and every new account starts with 1,000 credits. Browsing, sharing and making your own decks and quizzes doesn't cost credits.
Some things do, like unlocking other people's decks, questionnaires, logic puzzles and Hootly AI Agent.
See what credits buyIs there an age limit?
You can register from age 16. If you're younger, a parent or guardian needs to agree first. Paying takes an adult, or a parent's permission and card.
Studying
How do I make a flashcard deck?
Open Flashcards and choose to make a deck. Add a title, subject and grade, then write your cards. We check public decks before others can see them.
Make a deckCan other people see my notes?
Yes, once an admin approves them. Until then only you can see them, and we might suggest changes first. You can follow the status under your own notes.
Where can I see my progress?
Your profile shows your activity and streak, and Results lists your quizzes, questionnaires and puzzles.

Who can message me?
If you follow each other, messages arrive straight away. Anyone else can send one message request, and they can't write again until you accept it.
How do I stop someone from contacting me?
Open their profile and block them. They can't message or follow you, and you won't see each other's posts. To report a post, comment or message, use the Report button next to it.
Wellbeing
Are the questionnaires a diagnosis?
No. They're for self-reflection and can't replace a doctor or psychologist.
Who can read my journal and mood entries?
They belong to your account and aren't shown to other users. You can download or delete them with the rest of your data.
What if I need help right now?
In Hungary you can call the free 116-111 helpline for children and young people or the 116-123 emotional support line. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 112.

Your account
I forgot my password. What now?
Use the recovery code you saved when you signed up, together with your email address, to choose a new password. You can make a new code any time under Security in Edit profile.
Recover my accountHow do I turn on two-step verification?
Go to Edit profile, open Security and follow the steps with an authenticator app.
Can I change my username or notifications?
Yes. Your username is under About you in Edit profile, and your notification choices are under Notifications.
How do I download or delete my data?
Both are under Security in Edit profile.
Deleting removes your profile, private entries, results, credits and AI conversations right away. Notes, decks, posts and comments that others can already see stay under the name "Deleted user", and messages you sent stay in other people's conversations.
